The Old Robinites Association: Previous Dinners

The Old Robinites Association has held an annual dinner ever year since 1960. The venue has usually been a London club and in recent years we have been at The East India Club in St James's Square, having outgrown the Travellers' Club around the corner in Pall Mall. With up to 100 ORs and OC guests attending we needed the East India Club's big, square dining room.

We pride ourselves on being fairly informal and having as much fun possible. We usually invite a special guest and ask them to speak briefly on their own topic, relating it back to life at Charterhouse wherever possible. Special guests in recent years have included: the Headmaster, John Witheridge; best-selling crime novelist Peter James R68; ex-head of BBC Films David Thompson R68; Robert Bogdan BH; and John Peters ex-BH. In 2010 we changed tack a little to celebrate 50 years of the ORA with an illustrated talk on the 'History of Robinites'. Pictures from this talk can be found on the 'Visual History' page.

88 meet the new Headmaster at the 2014 Dinner

A big turn out of of 88 ORs and guests gathered at the East India Club on September 9th to meet the new Headmaster and his wife Dr Rachel Crowther.

With John Byrt (R47) and Simon Kimmins (R48) attending, we had an age span of some 67 years and many people had travelled long distances. Most notably Stewart Hawkins came from France, Nigel Donovan - USA, Alistair Curry - Germany, Chris Thompson - Estonia and James Thom - Singapore.

99 at the 2013 Dinner!

Ninety nine Old Robinites and OC guests (scroll down for the list) attended the ORA's annual dinner at the East India Club on Tuesday September 10 this year - a record turnout!

Former Housemaster Hugh Gammell and ex-matron sally Rutty were there once again; our most senior attendee was Guy Whitaker (R45) and guests came from Gownboys, Verites, Duckites, Bodeites and Hodgesonites. The Housemaster's wife Mrs Hazel Hearn attended for the first time and the highlight of the evening came with an interactive, illustrated selection of 'Bogdan's Tales' - stories (often quirky) from the school's history related by Brooke Hall's Senior member Robert Bogdan.

Stories and pictures included the legendary 1959 cricket team - two of whose members, Nick Walton and Robert Gillespie, were present - and the 1970s visit by Chelsea FC in which David Levy - also present played against stars such as Webb, Hollins and Harris.

The meal concluded in time for out of town members to catch trains, while others continued in the bar until midnight, when many younger members dispersed to various 'after party' venues.

The date for the dinner is now fixed as Second Tuesday in September - so next year's event is on Tuesday September 9th - see you then!

2011 Dinner

The Old Robinites Association held its Annual Dinner at the East India Club, in London's St James’s Square on Tuesday May 10 and we had a terrific time with 75 ORs in attendance.

With the school’s 400^th anniversary celebrations on the horizon, we were very lucky in persuading Ernst Zillekens, editor of the magnificent new book Charterhouse, a 400^th anniversary portrait, to be our special guest. Especially for the ORA Ernst divulged some of the more unusual and quirky items from his research in an after dinner talk entitled Charterhouse life from unexpected angles.

Sholto Moger R00 also gave a short but moving talk about the foundation that has been set up in memory of his old school friend Mark Evison, who was killed while serving in Afghanistan two years ago this month. Housemaster Stephen Hearn, together with the house tutor, senior present day Robinites and Matron Connie Mayo all joined us and they brought the House Football Cup with them. Winning the House Football Cup for the first time since 1974 was just one of the news highlights that Stephen reported. Chairman Nigel Legge was able to respond with the fact that three of 1974's winning team were present, as was one of the Bodeites from the losing side! Nigel also invited Connie Mayo, whose retirement Stephen announced, to become an honorary Old Robinite, so we hope to see her again in future years, along with her predecessor Sally Rutty who also attended this year.
